Carving and Printing
I’ll be teaching block printing this winter, and want to share a little bit of what I find so engaging in the process. Some months ago, I put together this process video (and wrote about it) - a multiple block linocut from carving to inking and printing multiple color proofs. It’s slow and layered work, lots of steps which become second-nature the more you do them.
It builds in time to reflect and pivot within an idea, and transforms anything you draw into a solidly carved sculpture in linoleum. Ink on little islands of lino left behind (your image is what you leave behind), catching ink as its laid down in smooth layers, colors you can see together, change, change the entire picture through that darker or lighter color. Choose new colors completely, new picture. It’s got a certain charm.
I’m offering intro relief printing classes at my local art center in Marietta, GA, two separate sessions from January through March. We’ll be printing with a small etching press, which means we can print larger images and with ease. If you’re local, take a look at the offerings, I’d love to see you in class.
If you’re not local, are you interested in seeing more super chill carving and printing videos?
Namaste,
